Facebook Ads Payment Problems in Bangladesh: Cards, VAT and Failed Charges

More ad accounts in Bangladesh stop because of payment problems than because of bad marketing. The billing system is explainable once someone shows you how it actually charges you.

By Manuar Jahan Rana · E-commerce Growth Partner

The pattern is familiar: a campaign is finally working, then the ads stop overnight. No rejection, no policy warning. The cause is a failed charge. Payment issues are the most ordinary and most disruptive problem Bangladeshi advertisers face, because paying a US platform from here crosses banking rules, currency conversion and tax at the same time. Understanding the machinery removes most of the fear.

Why cards get declined

Meta charges in US dollars. Many local cards are not enabled for international online transactions by default, or have low foreign-currency limits, or block unfamiliar overseas charges as a safety measure. The card can hold plenty of taka and still decline every Meta charge. The fix lives at your bank: confirm the card allows international e-commerce payments, ask about its foreign transaction limits, and tell the bank that recurring charges from Meta are expected and yours.

The real cost of a dollar of ads

The amount that leaves your account is more than the amount Ads Manager shows. The bank converts at its own exchange rate, card charges can apply, and Bangladesh applies 15% VAT on Facebook advertising spend. None of this is a Meta trick, but it surprises founders who budget the dashboard figure to the last taka and then watch charges clear higher. Keep a buffer on the card above your planned spend so a slightly larger charge never becomes a failed one.

Why charges arrive at odd times

Meta does not bill neatly at midnight. It charges when your spend crosses a billing threshold, and the threshold rises as your account builds a reliable payment history. Several charges in one day, or one large charge after several quiet days, are both normal results of that system. Founders often read an unfamiliar charge pattern as fraud and dispute it with the bank, which then creates a genuine account problem. Check the billing section of Ads Manager first; every charge is itemised there.

What a failed charge does to the account

When a charge fails, advertising pauses and the account carries a balance. Until the balance clears, campaigns stay off, and repeated failures can invite closer restrictions on the account. Clear it fast: fix the card issue or pay the balance with a working method, then check that campaigns have resumed instead of assuming they restarted on their own. A working backup payment method added before you need it is the cheapest insurance in the whole setup.

Paying through third parties, carefully

Many small advertisers pay through agencies or dollar sellers because they lack a suitable card. If you use any such arrangement, protect the one thing that matters most: the ad account, Page and Pixel must live inside your own business portfolio, under your ownership. Money routes can change in a week. Asset ownership mistakes take much longer to undo, and they surface at the worst moments, as the restricted account checklist explains. Accounts I run under Meta (Facebook & Instagram) Ads management are always built on the client's own assets for this reason.

Questions Business Owners Ask Me

Can I pay Meta directly with bKash or Nagad?

No. Meta does not accept Bangladeshi mobile banking directly. Payments go through an eligible card or another payment method Meta lists for your account, which is why a properly enabled dual-currency card is the standard route.

Meta charged me twice in one day. Is that an error?

Usually not. Threshold billing charges you each time spend crosses your current threshold, so busy days can produce more than one charge. Match the charges against the billing history inside Ads Manager before disputing anything.

My ads stopped but there is no policy warning. What do I check first?

Billing. Open the payment settings and look for a failed charge or an account balance. It is the most common silent stopper, and the fastest one to fix once you know where to look.
